29 November 2008: Official Launch
From 9-12am the Centre for Legal Studies will be officially launched. The Minister of Justice has been invited as the Guest of Honour. On this occasion, Dr. Fidelis E. Kanyongolo will give a public lecture on legal education in Malawi, its prospects and challenges.

Short Intensive Courses

November 2008
From 26 to 28 November the Centre will organise a 3 day intensive course on International Commercial Law.

February - November 2009
Tentative topics for courses to be provided in 2009 will include:

  • International Trade Law with an emphasis on the dispute settlement system of the World Trade Organisation and Regional Trade Organisations

  • Legal Research Methods – Data bases

  • Project Finance

  • The Loan Agreement and Related Legal Aspects of Financing (repeat of the 2008 course)

  • Joint Ventures and Mergers & Acquisitions (partly repeat of the 2008 course)

  • Drafting General Commercial Contracts

  • Securities – Debt securities and Debentures

  • The role of the lawyer in IPO’s

  • Company Law

  • Corporate Governance

  • The Malawi Stock Exchange

  • Advocacy (repeat of the 2008 courses)

  • The case law of the Commercial Court – update and discussion

  • The Constitution and International Human Rights

Registration

Target Audience
The content of each of the courses described herein will suit all lawyers other legal professionals from Malawi and the Region.

  • Lawyers/Attorneys in private practice.
  • Corporate Legal Council (commercial companies, banks and other financial institutions, etc).
  • Heads of Legal Departments (commercial companies, banks and other financial institutions, etc).
  • Government employed Lawyers and Legal Officers.
  • Legal Scholars.
  • Legal Council to NGO’s.

How to register
Registration for each course takes place by sending an email to legalstudies@cunima.net stating the name of the course you wish to register for, your full name, profession and years of experience. Registration is confirmed upon receipt of the payment of the course fees (see below).

Payment
Payment of the course fees is to be made at least two days before the commencement date of the course. Payment can be made by cash or cheque deposit ton the following account:
